The objective of poker

Either make the best hand in poker or persuade every other player to fold in order to win. Each player's wager from each round is referred to as the "pot," which is taken by the winner.

Poker rules for beginners: step-by-step guide

1. Shuffle

Between each hand, the dealer thoroughly shuffles the cards. Hole cards, or two cards in Texas Hold'em and four cards in Omaha, are handed to each player.

2. Pre-Flop

Depending on the possible value of their opening hands, players might choose to call, raise, re-raise, or fold at this early betting stage.

3. Flop

In the middle of the table, the three community cards (the board) are exposed. Gamers can start constructing their hands and once more decide whether to check, raise, or fold.

4. Turn

Face up is the fourth community card. Each player's hand worth starts to become much more apparent. Players check, raise, or fold once more.

5. River

After the fifth and last card is dealt face-up, the players know the total worth of their hand. Players have one more chance to check, raise, or fold.

6. Showdown

The last phase. Every last player shows their hands to the public, face up.

7. The best hand wins

The pot is won by the player with the best hand. See our guide on poker hand rankings to learn the importance of knowing your hand rankings.
