The greatest winners of the Sussex Stakes ever

The greatest winners of the Sussex Stakes ever

Enormous Goodwood is almost here! The Group One Sussex Stakes is one of the races to watch out for over the fantastic five days of top-notch racing we have planned.
One of the most eagerly awaited events on the flat calendar is the Sussex Stakes, where the three-year-olds compete against their elders over a mile course after emerging from the early season Classics.
The top Sussex Stakes victors throughout history are highlighted on this list.

Frankel – 2011, 2012

With the greatest, Frankel, what better place to begin? He is the only horse to have won the Sussex Stakes twice and is unbeaten in 14 outings. Unquestionably the most dominant flat horse of all time, the 10-time Group One winner's record speaks for itself in terms of both outcomes and the style of victory each time. In 2011, he won the event for the first time, starting as an 8/13 favorite and leading the group of four before showing off his incredible turn of foot and winning by five lengths over the previous winner, Canford Cliffs.

After winning three more Group One races, he made his way to the Sussex countryside in 2012 and was declared the 1/20 favorite—by far the shortest SP we've seen in the race. The result was the same; he took the lead this time and was pushed out to win by a growing margin of six lengths, his 12th consecutive triumph.

Kingman – 2014

Kingman, who was tutored by John Gosden, is the second prisoner on the Juddmonte list. In what was a very successful year for the three-year-old at the time, he defeated Toronado, the winner of the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, in the 2014 Sussex Stakes. He won his fourth consecutive Group One race at Goodwood before traveling to Deauville, France, to compete in the Group One Jacques du Marois.

Solow – 2015

Solow, the lone French-trained horse on our list, deserves to be ranked among the top contenders for the Sussex.

He advanced in his racing career, winning his first Group One race at the age of five at the Dubai Turf at Meydan. He is a 13-time winner. Four straight Group One wins in the UK and France followed, including the Sussex Stakes.

Baaeed – 2022

Although it's rare to draw comparisons to the aforementioned Frankel seriously, the 2021–2022 run of Baaeed attracted what were, at the time, reasonable comparisons to the star.

Scooting clear at Goodwood, Baaeed, the 2022 Sussex Stakes winner, made it nine in a row. He was a six-time Group One winner, a master at the mile, and appeared destined to go down as one of the best of all time until losing at 1/4 in the Ascot Champion Stakes, ending his winning streak of eleven races in a row. Though history won't see him as favorably as it will, he is without a doubt among the greatest Sussex Stakes winners ever.
